Tesco: Strategic Management Analysis Introduction This unit discuss about the strategic management and leadership of the organization. So in this report discuss about the relationship between strategic management and leadership and impact on strategic decisions. As next question discuss about the support of management and leadership theory on organizational direction and consider about the impact of management and leadership styles on Tesco PLCs growth strategy and discuss about the leadership strategy of the Tesco. In the third part determine about the leadership requirements and about the current and future leadership requirements of Tesco. Then discuss about the development of leadership requirements and usefulness of selected methods to develop the leadership skills. 1.1 Understand the relationship between strategic management and leadership 1.1.1 Relationship between Strategic Management and Leadership The organizational strategy is determine by the first person or top management of the organization, then the strategy was formulated and implemented as two parts. The using effective management of strategy process can be express as a strategic management. The strategic management helps to achieve the organizational goals and objectives to create competitive advantage. The strategies are not only created by the top management but due to forces of the leadership the strategies were implemented and carrying out by the organizations. Sometimes the leadership created the situation for need of strategic change in the organization. The leadership is very influential and motivates the people in terms of achievement of the organizational expectations. Therefore the leadership was affect to the organizational activities and the strategic management process. Therefore these are a relationship between strategic management and leadership. The different leadership styles of affect to the organizat ional establishment of vision, mission, goals, establishment of organizational management/ structure/ culture, rules and regulations and etc of related activities of strategic management process. (Hill and Jones 2007) 1.1.2 Impact of management and leadership styles on strategic decisions The management styles The management style of Peter Drucker explained the setting of objectives of the organization, plan organize the work in to a specific manner, motivate the employees and other managers to work, performance / achievements/ communication measuring based on the objectives and employee development. This clearly identifies the influence from the management style to the strategy process of the organization, means the strategic decisions were also impacted on management style of Peter Drucker. As next management style is F.W. Taylors scientific management system of management of organizational activities. In this style the manager provided the specific way of doing each an every task to utilize the work, the employee will motivate through paying incentives and all tasks were change according to the scientific management style. That means the strategic decisions were affected by the scientific style of management. The employees accept his decisions in any time that means this leader can influence to the strategic decisions of the organization. The next leadership theory discuss was about situational theory with change according to the situation of the organization. The four situations of (a) tell- the leader tells to the subordinates about specific instructions (b) sell- the subordinates receives the independence to work under investigation of the leader (c) participate- the employees will take collective decisions about the organization (d) delegate- leader look at until the subordinates come up to the targets. These all four situations impact to the strategic decisions of the organization. This strategy express the correct decision of the leader, that means the market share cannot be instantly increase, more time is required. On the other hand within the last two to three years the economy was down turn very much, most of the companies face to the loss of market share. Therefore the improvement of market share within a short period of time was not practical. The decision making of Tesco was due to successfulness of long term strategy implementation. The other decision of the Tesco was the diversified the business. Due to this diversification reduce the complex within the business affairs. Each sub set earn own profits and different growth rates and provides the way for easy to benchmark purposes and improve performance, diversified decision making and all. Tesco invest in the recession time to improve the customer facilities, infrastructure, customer offers and for employee contribution. Through this strategic decision in recession time the customers and employees was happy and it was a competitive advantage over other organizations in for being a recession time. According to the situation of the business environment Tesco take the correct strategic decision to improve business affairs and profits. 1.2 Apply management and leadership theory to support organizational direction 1.2.1 Impact that selected theories of management and leadership have on organizational growth strategy The Tesco was diversified the business in to groups to perform. Therefore the groups discuss their strategy in regular basis. The whole group also gathered and discusses strategic issues by taking two full days in the Board meeting. As the teamwork management style the Tesco provided the directions to understand the individual group tasks and perform in the diversified business unit of Tesco. Therefore to lead the employees in to a correct way the leadership required a, communication between employees, encourage them, adapt them to changes, increase the responsibility among employees, eliminate the conflicts and so on are required in the current organizational context of Tesco. The one of the main objective of the Tesco is also the achievement of high profit margins through international and UK market. Therefore the leadership will be highly influential on achieving the competitive advantage to the organization. Some of the employees in the Tesco has stakes of the Tesco, therefore they can be overconfidence and empowered in the future due to the size of their stakes, so the leadership must be there to control them in ethical manner to eliminate the badly influence in business affairs. The discussion with the senior managers help to get the information about the leadership methods, different behaviors needed in different situations, different aspects of leaderships and etc. And there are nearly 34% of the managers have at least one year experience of working outside the home country, so the discuss with about their experience help to identify the different behaviors, cultures, appropriate leadership styles of those countries. On job training will improve the decision making skills, negotiation skills and etc. the improvement of these skills help to leader to manage any critical situation in the organization and will be able to control the situation. The informal learning will improve the communication skills of the individual leader. Through the communication skills the leader can change the minds of the employees to acceptable condition in any situation (Lussier andÃâà Achua 2009). Conclusion The leadership influence to the strategic management of the organization. The Peter Drucker, F.W. Taylor of leadership styles influence to the strategic decisions and the leadership styles of trait theory and situational theory were also impact on strategic decisions of the organization. Teamwork management style was suitable to discuss the management style of the Tesco and the participatory leadership style help to identify the organizational strategy. The vision leadership strategy expresses the future direction of Tesco. The Tesco required a leadership to fulfill the current requirements of communication, negotiation, responsibility, eliminate conflicts and so on. Due to diversity and need of competitive advantage create the future leadership requirements to the Tesco and these can be develop through on job training, discussion with seniors and informal learning.

Analysis of Greasy Lake by Tom Coraghessan ââ¬Å"Greasy Lake" by Tom Coraghessan Boyle, is the story of a group of adolescents, searching for the one situation that will proclaim them as bad boys and how their minds change. As the story begins, the narrator gives the impression that he feels he and the others boys should have taken notice of some obvious clues about themselves. These clues would have led them to the conclusion that they were far from the bad guys they wished to be. However, the oblivious teenagers ignore these obvious signs and continue in search of their goal. In this story, Boyle uses many symbols to create the theme. The individual vehicles are each symbols in the portion of the story that they appear. For example, early in the story, the narrator describes the car they drive to Greasy Lake as an old station wagon, obviously not the ââ¬Å"rideâ⬠of a true tough-guy. When the boys arrive at Greasy Lake, a ââ¬Å"chopperâ⬠is parked on the shore, and next to it is a 57 Chevy (Boyle 113). Both of the vehicles are hotrods that imply a ââ¬Å"greasyâ⬠image. The Chevy owner is a tough muscular character who beats the stuff out of the narrator and his friends. The biker, whom is regarded as a bad older character, is dangerous by stereotype alone. Consequently, the vehicles are representative of the individuals who drove them. Another symbol of the danger the young men face is Greasy Lake itself. Giggling, Bonnie tripped on her way down the stairs, her foot coming right out of her high-heeled shoe. ââ¬Å"Here you go, Cinderel a,â⬠Zander said, picking up the shoe and kneeling in front of her. He helped slip her foot back into it, his fingers warm and steady against her instep. Bonnie gave a mock curtsy, muffling her laughter. ââ¬Å"Thank you, m'lord,â⬠she said flirtatiously. She felt fabulous, so sil y and happy. It was almost as if she was drunk, but she'd only had a few sips of beer. No, she was drunk. Drunk on Zander, on his kisses, his gentle hands, and his big blue eyes. She took his hand, and he smiled down at her, that long slow smile, and Bonnie just absolutely quivered. ââ¬Å"Seems like the party's wrapping up,â⬠she said, as they hit the first floor. It was real y getting late, almost two o'clock. There were only a few groups of hard-core partiers left: a bunch of frat boys by the keg, some theater-department girls dancing with great wide swoops of their arms, a couple sitting hand in hand at the bottom of the stairs in deep conversation. Meredith, Stefan, Samantha, and Matt had disappeared, and if Elena had ever shown up, she had left, too. Zander's friends had gone, or been kicked out. ââ¬Å"Good-bye, good-bye,â⬠Bonnie caroled to the few people who remained. She hadn't real y gotten a chance to talk to any of them, but they al looked perfectly nice. Maybe next time she went to a party, she'd stay longer and real y bond with people she hadn't met before. Look at al the new friends her friends had made on campus. Bonnie gave a special wave to a couple of people she'd seen Matt with lately ââ¬â a shortish guy whose name she thought was Ethan and that girl with the dark curls and dimples. Not freshmen. She loved everyone tonight, but they deserved it most, because they had seen what a wonderful guy Matt was. They waved back at her, a little hesitantly, and the girl smiled, her dimples deepening. ââ¬Å"They seem real y nice,â⬠Bonnie told Zander, and he glanced back at them as he opened the door. ââ¬Å"Hmmm,â⬠he said noncommittal y, and the look in his eyes, just for a minute, made Bonnie shiver. ââ¬Å"Aren't they?â⬠she said nervously. Zander looked away from them, back toward her, and his warm bril iant smile spread across his face. Bonnie relaxed; the coldness she'd seen in Zander's eyes must have been just a trick of the light. ââ¬Å"Of course they are, Bonnie,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I just got distracted for a sec.â⬠He wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pul ing her close, and dropped a kiss on the top of her head. She sighed contentedly, cuddling up against his side. They walked together companionably for a while. ââ¬Å"Look at the stars,â⬠Bonnie said softly. The night was clear and the stars hung bright in the sky. ââ¬Å"It's because it's starting to get colder at night that we can see them so Well.â⬠Zander didn't answer, only made a hmming sound deep in his throat again, and Bonnie glanced up at him through her eyelashes. ââ¬Å"Do you want to get breakfast with me in the morning?â⬠she asked. ââ¬Å"On Sundays, the cafeteria does make-your-own waffles, with lots of different toppings. Delicious.â⬠Zander was staring off into the distance with that same half-listening expression he had the last time they walked across campus together. ââ¬Å"Zander?â⬠Bonnie asked cautiously, and he frowned down at her, biting his lip thoughtful y. ââ¬Å"Sorry,â⬠he said. He took his arm off of Bonnie's shoulders and backed away a few steps, smiling stiffly. His whole body was tense, as if he was about to take off running. ââ¬Å"Zander?â⬠she asked again, confused. ââ¬Å"I forgot something,â⬠Zander said, avoiding her eyes. ââ¬Å"I have to go back to the party.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh. I'l come with you,â⬠Bonnie offered. ââ¬Å"No, that's okay.â⬠Zander was shifting from foot to foot, glancing over Bonnie's shoulders as if, suddenly, he'd rather be anywhere than with her. Abruptly, he surged forward and kissed her awkwardly, their teeth knocking together, and then he stepped backward and turned, walking in the other direction. His strides lengthened, and soon he was running away from her, disappearing into the night. Again. He didn't look back. Bonnie, suddenly alone, shivered and looked around, peering into the darkness on al sides. She had been so happy a minute ago, and now she felt cold and dismayed, as if she had been hit with a splash of freezing cold water. ââ¬Å"You have got to be kidding me,â⬠she said aloud. Elena was shaking so hard that Damon was afraid she might just shake herself apart. He wrapped his arms around her comfortingly, and she glanced up at him without real y seeming to see him, her eyes glassy. ââ¬Å"Stefanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ she moaned softly, and Damon had to fight down a sharp stab of irritation. So Stefan was overreacting. What else was new? Damon was here, Damon was with her and supporting her, and Elena needed to realize that. He was tempted to grab Elena firmly by the chin and make her real y look at him. In the old days, he would have done just that. Hel , in the old days, he would have sent a blast of Power at Elena until she was docile in his hands, until she didn't even remember Stefan's name. His canines prickled longingly just thinking of it. Her blood was like wine. Not that expecting Elena to give in to his Power meekly had ever worked particularly Well, he admitted to himself, his mouth curling into a smile. But he wasn't like that anymore. And he didn't want her that way. He was trying so hard, although he hated to admit it even to himself, to be worthy of Elena. To be worthy of Stefan, even, if it came right down to it. It had been comforting to final y have his baby brother looking at him with something other than hatred and disgust. Well, that was over. The tentative truce, the beginnings of friendship, the brotherhood, whatever it had been between him and Stefan, was gone. ââ¬Å"Come on, princess,â⬠he murmured to Elena, helping her up the stairs toward her door. ââ¬Å"Just a little farther.â⬠He couldn't be sorry they kissed. She was so beautiful, so alive and vibrant in his arms. And she tasted so good. And he loved her, he did, as far as his hard heart was capable of it. His mouth curled again, and he could taste his own bitterness. Elena was never going to be his, was she? Even when Stefan turned his back on her, the self-righteous idiot, he was al she thought about. Damon's free hand, the one that wasn't cupping Elena's shoulder protectively, tightened into a fist. They'd reached Elena's room, and Damon fished in her purse for her keys, unlocking the door for her. ââ¬Å"Damon,â⬠she said, turning in the doorway to look him straight in the eyes for the first time since before Stefan caught them kissing. She looked pale stil , but resolute, her mouth a straight line. ââ¬Å"Damon, it was a mistake.â⬠Damon's heart dropped like a stone, but he held her gaze. ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠he said, his voice steady. ââ¬Å"Everything wil work out in the end, princess, you'l see.â⬠He forced his lips to turn up in a reassuring, supportive smile. The smile of a friend. Then Elena was gone, the door to her room shutting firmly behind her. Damon spun in his tracks, cursing, and kicked at the wal behind him. It cracked, and he kicked it again with a sour satisfaction at the feeling of the plaster splitting. There was a muted grumbling coming from behind the other doors on the floor, and Damon could hear footsteps approaching, someone coming to investigate the noise. If he had to deal with anyone now, he'd probably kil him. That wouldn't be a good idea, no matter how much he might enjoy it for the moment, not with Elena right here. Launching himself toward an open hal window, Damon smoothly transitioned to a crow in midair. It was a relief to stretch his wings, to pick up the rhythm of flying and feel the breeze against his feathers, lifting and supporting him. He flew through the window with a few strong beats of his wings and flung himself out into the night. Catching the wind, he soared recklessly high despite the darkness of the night. He needed the rush of the wind against his body, needed the distraction.
